Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last set of permanent teeth to erupt, typically in your late teens or early twenties. While some individuals have no issues with their wisdom teeth, many experience complications that lead to pain and discomfort.
Common problems caused by wisdom teeth include:
- Impaction: Wisdom teeth may become impacted, unable to fully erupt through the gums, causing pain and discomfort.
- Crowding: If there’s not enough space in your mouth, wisdom teeth can push against adjacent teeth, leading to misalignment.
- Angle Issues: Wisdom teeth may grow in at an awkward angle, leading to additional oral problems.
- Partial Eruption: When wisdom teeth don’t fully emerge, they can create gum inflammation and infection risks.
To prevent future complications, many people choose to have their wisdom teeth removed early. At Avalon Dental Group, we provide safe, effective, and gentle wisdom tooth extraction services to help alleviate pain and restore your oral health.

What To Expect for Your Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction is considered oral surgery and, depending on the circumstances, may be anywhere from a relatively simple procedure to a more extensive one. Your Avalon Dental Group oral surgeon has anesthesia options to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
After you receive anesthesia, an incision will be made to expose the tooth and bone. If needed, some bone will be removed to unblock access to the tooth roots. Sometimes wisdom teeth need to be sectioned and removed in pieces. Once the entire tooth is removed, the extraction site will be thoroughly cleaned of debris, and stitches will be placed to promote healing. Gauze will be placed over the wound to control the bleeding and help the blood clot form.
After Wisdom Tooth Extraction
It is vital to follow the instructions you will be given for home care. Carefully following the instructions will help with proper healing and prevent painful problems like dry socket, which can occur if the blood clot is dislodged.
You may experience some swelling and bruising; using an ice pack will help with this. Removal of wisdom teeth is considered surgery, so you will want to rest afterward and avoid strenuous activity for a week or so to help preserve the blood clot. Most normal activities can be resumed the following day.
Avoid drinking with a straw and avoid alcoholic, caffeinated, hot and carbonated beverages for the first 24 hours after your extraction. You can eat soft foods but avoid hard, chewy, or hot and spicy foods that could get stuck in the socket or irritate the extraction site.
It is important that the blood clot form in the socket, so avoid brushing, rinsing or using mouthwash for the first 24 hours after the extraction. When you resume brushing your teeth, be very gentle around the wound and avoid aggressive rinsing of your mouth.
