Are Dental Bridges a Permanent Tooth Replacement?

You’ll hear different answers all over the internet. Are dental bridges permanent or not? The answer is yes…with an asterisk. Dental bridges are permanent in that they don’t come in and out like partial dentures do. You cannot remove them at all without the help of a dentist. However, they are not life-long replacements like dental implants are. They will need to be replaced, no matter how well you take care of them.

That being said, you can get a lot more mileage out of your bridges by brushing and flossing, flossing underneath your bridge, and not biting down on hard foods, objects, or ice. You can also get a better return on your investment if you avoid smoking or vaping which can harm the gums and rapidly decay teeth.

How Often Do Bridges Need to Be Replaced?

Again, your answers will vary for how long bridges actually last. There are a variety of factors to consider, including the quality of materials used in your bridge and how well you care for them. Your bridge can be made out of a variety of materials, including:

  • Porcelain
  • Porcelain fused to zirconia
  • Metal
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Composite resin

The stronger materials such as gold, porcelain fused to zirconia, and porcelain fused to metal can last upwards of 15 years with proper care. These materials are made to withstand repeated and extreme pressure. Composite resin, on the other hand, is a much cheaper alternative that will need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years. While it’s more accessible in terms of cost, it’s not nearly as durable.

How Are Bridges Put In?

The way bridges are installed makes them one of the more permanent restorations. Once you affix a bridge, you can’t go back. Here’s how bridges are installed:

  • The abutment tooth (your natural tooth that exists on one side of a gap) is ground down
  • A dental crown is placed over the abutment tooth with dental cement
  • The bridge (replacement teeth) connects to the dental crown

Because the natural tooth that anchors your bridge is ground down, you can’t “go back” after choosing bridges. You can potentially choose other options down the road, but bridges cannot be removed without the help of a professional.

Do Bridges Fall Out?

While rare, bridges can fall out. Typically this happens at the end of the bridge’s life span or with significant neglect or injury. This is why it’s best to visit your dentist regularly, as they can check to make sure that your bridge is secure. If you feel like your bridge is loose, or if you notice any gapping or damage, don’t hesitate to speak to your dentist.

If the abutment tooth is exposed (the tooth that is keeping the bridge in place), you may experience extreme sensitivity and discomfort upon losing the crown.
